"Putin Signals Willingness to Pause Offensive in Ukraine, Sources Say"
"Putin signaled a willingness to retract Moscow’s territorial claims in parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—four regions currently under partial Russian occupation."
"Kyiv, backed by its European allies, continues to demand a full restoration of Ukraine’s borders as they stood before 2014."
Putin Reportedly Offers Ceasefire Along Ukraine Front Line as Trump Eyes Peace Deal
Citing sources “familiar with the matter,” the FT claims that Putin made the proposal during a meeting earlier this month in St. Petersburg with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
As part of the offer, Putin signaled a willingness to relinquish Russia’s claims to parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—four Ukrainian regions that are currently only partially occupied by Russian forces.
In exchange, Moscow is reportedly seeking significant concessions from Washington, including U.S. recognition of Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and formal assurances that Ukraine will not join NATO.
However, Kyiv and its European allies remain firm in their stance, calling for a full restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity based on its pre-2014 borders. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has cast doubt on that position, describing it as “unrealistic” under current geopolitical conditions.
The report underscores the complex diplomatic balancing act facing Western powers as they navigate between ending the conflict and upholding international law regarding Ukraine's sovereignty.
